Artist Statement:
Nature and Fairy Tales have always been a main source of inspiration for me. The ability to create a narrative in pictures, whether understood by the viewer or not, is the primary focus of my work. Taking commonplace objects that are used an seen day in and day out by most people, and weaving them into a story that brings them their own life and attention is thrilling to me. It's always the little things that add up to bring the most pleasure or the most pain...
Most of the themes in my work involve both the positive and negative experiences integral to our lives, and this is what fascinates me about Fairy Tales, their power to overcome the most mundane and just as often the most difficult problems via the use of symbols and dreamlike narratives.
These things bring me back to my childhood. There was freedom and imagination playing in the woods and streams where I grew up. I remember, as many probably can, making my own little world in the hollow of a pine or running the deer paths that labrynthed the forest, sometimes getting so involved that time and place were forgotten and days seemed to go on forever.
Creating art brings me back to those places. My most successful pieces and ideas, to me, come when I can close myself up in my studio (surrounded by my music, books, collections of found objects) and hang my adult self in the closet for the day. Forgetting about bills and laundry and traffic and errands...forgetting to even eat lunch some days. This plays a huge part in my creative experience. In getting back to my truths, my fears and my loves and being able to submerge myself in inspirations that I've gathered, and to be mindful of what is going on in my head without the constant chattering of the world outside.
